A LATE GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT SECRETAIRE-BOOKCASE

The arched dentilled cornice centred by a husk-swagged urn, above a husk-swagged frieze and a pair of geometrically-glazed doors enclosing four adjustable shelves, flanked on each side by a conforming door and enclosing four adjustable shelves, the lower section with a fitted secretaire-drawer with green baize-lined slide above six lidded wells, each with an oval medallion with alphabet letters, above a pair of circular-panelled doors enclosing three sliding trays, flanked on each side by a drawer above a conforming panelled door enclosing three sliding trays in one cupboard and two in the other, on a plinth base, lacking the urn finials to the cornice, the later Victorian lock stamped 'CHUBBS NEW PATENT' around a crown '57 ST PAULS CHYD D 10806 LONDON' and with Victorian escutcheons

Lot Essay

Gillows designed an almost identical breakfront library bookcase, with central domed pediment, four doors with wire mesh and 'good locks', above crossbanded circular panels 'of best rosewood', in the lower doors, for Lady Wakes on 8 August 1792, illustrated in L. Boynton (ed.), Gillow Furniture Designs, 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, pl. 167 and p. 171.
