Lot Essay
Roger van der Cruse, dit Lacroix, matre in 1755.
Roger van der Cruse (1728 - 1799), the son of a Parisian bniste who had emmigrated from Flanders, became matre bniste on 6 February 1755. The brother-in-law of Jean-Franois Oeben (and subsequently Jean-Henri Riesener), as well as Simon Oeben and the ciseleur Andr Ravrio, Lacroix established his atelier in the faubourg Saint Antoine and used two stamps, 'LACROIX' or the abbreviated version 'R.V.L.C.', depending on whether his patrons were private or marchands. Patronised by the marchands-merciers Pierre II Migeon (between 1751 and 1758) and Simon-Philippe Poirier, for whom he supplied furniture destined for Madame du Barry at Louveciennes, at the end of the 1760s he also supplied commodes for the bniste du roi Gilles Joubert, who was unable to satisfy the insatiable demand of the Garde-Meuble.
The Rothschild scrtaaire en cabinet belongs to a small group of related examples all executed by RVLC. These comprise:-
- that inlaid with a naif marquetry of writing-utensils above a similarly inlaid undertier, which was sold from the collection of E. Larcade, Paris, 25 May 1951, lot 101.
- another with chevron-parquetry case and quarter-veneered undertier, illustrated in N. de Reynis, Le mobilier Domestique, Paris, 1987, vol. II, p. 1125, no. 4257 (sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 24 June 1984, lot 3212).
- another with chevron-parquetry case and quarter-veneered undertier, sold anonymously at Arcole, Paris, 6 June 1990, lot 201.
- another with chevron-parquetry case and lacking undertier in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (inv. 65.2507), stamped by RVLC and Lonard Boudin, the latter undoubtedly as a marchand.
- another with chevron-parquetry case and lacking undertier, sold anonymously at Ader, Picard, Tajan, Paris, 2 March 1972, lot 105.
- another with chevron-parquetry case and lacking undertier from the collection of Vicomte T. de B., sold Paris, 1891, lot 149.
- and a final example with cube-parquetry case, slightly waved apron and lacking undertier, sold from the collection of Lucien Surmont, F. Lair-Dubreuil, Paris, 13 May 1912, lot 105.
