Lot Essay

The chair's back is designed following a pattern for 'Ribband Back chairs' from the St Martin's Lane cabinet-maker Thomas Chippendale's pattern book The Gentleman and Cabinet-maker's Director, 1st ed., 1754, plate XVI [=16]. Chippendale noted that the chair's design 'are the best I have ever seen (or perhaps have ever been made)'.
