Carved in delicate relief with scrolling foliage overall, the present casket is reminiscent of the work of César Bagard (1620-1704), court sculptor to duc Charles IV of Lorraine, who was known for his production of elegantly carved wooden caskets. Related 18th century examples sold at auction include one sold Christie’s, London, 8 January 2013, lot 177; and another, included as part of a set with a toilet mirror, sold Sotheby’s, New York, 19 May 2006, lot 242.
