A LOUIS XV GOLD-MOUNTED FOSSILIZED WOOD SNUFF-BOX
by Louis Roucel (fl. 1763-1787), marked, Paris, 1771/1772, with the charge and discharge marks of Julien Alaterre 1768-1774, with the counter-mark of Jean-Baptiste Fouache 1774-1780, later struck with the Dutch tax mark for local products 1893-1906
Oval box of mottled brown fossilized wood, with bevelled corners, the hinged gold mounts engraved with flutes and with a dotted border, the pierced thumbpiece chased as two laurel and berry branches tied with ribbons in a knotted bow
