The rectangular carrara marble top with pierced three-quarter gallery above three frieze drawers, the roll-top enclosing a black leather-lined writing slide and five drawers, above four drawers and a concealed drawer, on four fluted turned tapering legs terminating in toupie feet, stamped to the underside J Kochly, partially remounted

Lot Essay

This elegant bureau a cylindre, of striking architectural form with richly figured acajou moucheté and finely chased ormolu mounts belongs to the little-known cabinet-maker Joseph Kochly. Of swiss origin Kochly established his workshop in the Cour Saint-Joseph, rue de Charonne and became maître in 1783. The present bureau is closely related to an example also stamped Kochly and of nearly identical shape, illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris, 1998, p. 465.
