Lot Essay

Jean-Jacques Mantzer, know as Manser, active during reign of Louis XVI

Small writing-desks decorated with amusing pictorial marquetries were most fashionable in the second half of the 18th Century. The marquetry panels depicted motifs of urns, vases of flowers, musical instruments and various domestic utensils. The work of Charles Topino, (maître in 1773) is particularly associated with this special form of marquetry. He also supplied panels to other cabinet-makers meeting the demands of the marchands-merciers. A table à écrire with nearly identical trompe l'oeil decoration and also stamped by Manser was sold Sotheby's London, 26 June 1964, lot 129.
