A LOUIS XVI VARI-COLOUR GOLD TABLE SNUFF-BOX
by Sébastien Chéret (fl. 1768-1793), marked, Paris, 1776/1777, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Baptiste Fouache 1774-1780, the flange struck with inventory no. 632, later struck with the Dutch post-1955 control mark for 18-carat gold
Oval box, the cover, sides and base with panels of peaked engine-turning within fluted borders, the lid centred by an oval medallion chased in three-colour gold with love trophies including a pair of flaming hearts on an altar of love, a pair of beckoning doves in a basket and a bagpipe, within laurel wreathes on a diaper band, the sablé borders chased with husks interspersed with bows and crossed ribbons, the four side pilasters similarly chased with husks and flowers, the base of the sides with wavescroll rim
