CIRCA 1765, INTERIOR WITH CROWNED INTERLACED CS MARK, FRONT EDGE UNDERSIDE INCISED C.C.3.C
The rectangular half-timbered frame with a sloping slatted roof at the back, splayed side-walls and a sloping stage, the sides painted with Scaramouche and Harlequin below a red and yellow striped proscenium, a curved marbled gilt-edged pediment above, the central escutcheon edged with gilt scrolls and inscribed La Commedie Françoise in puce below a gilt knop finial, the interior with two backdrop flies, one with a cloudy sky, the other with white and puce stripes, the backdrop painted with a town scene with figures before buildings, the stage with five pierced apertures for scenery wings (broken through and skilfully restored, reverse with crack from base with small associated loss, front edges with slight chipping, pediment broken off and restuck with old repair, upper left scroll partially replaced, minute scratches to enamels and minute wear to gilding)
