Lot Essay

The distinctive moulding on this service was designed by Riedel in 1762 for for a service for the Marchesa Giovanelli-Martinegro; see Peter Lahnstein and Mechthild Landenberger, Das Ludwigsburger Porzellan und seine Zeit (Stuttgart, 1980), p. 91. For the combination of the moulded border and the painted decoration attributed to Hennig, see Hans Dieter Flach, Ludwigsburger Porzellan, Fayence, Steingut, Kacheln, Fleisen, Ein Handbuch (Stuttgart, n.d.) p. 472, pl. 42 where a dish of the same pattern as the present lot is illustrated.
