November 30th, 1987. Invitation-only guests entered the lavish Fifth Avenue mansion that houses The National Academy of Design in New York and were given three hours to "discover" the jeweled creations of JAR, the American-born Paris-based Joel A. Rosenthal. The exhibition, entitled "A Collection of Jewels Created in Celebration of Our Ten Years in the Place Vendôme", was explored by each guest through use of a flashlight, their only light source during the event. As renowned jewelry historian Hans Nadelhoffer stated, it was "the most revealing, mind-stirring show of jewelry in the last 50 years. No doubt jewelry will never be assessed in the same manner ever again. Rosenthal's designs seem to emerge from a dreamworld and carry a secret message from an unknown land. The pieces are sublime".
Such is the power of these three simple, yet powerful, letters which evoke images of elegance, rarity, beauty and the revival of bygone years at the Place Vendôme. From his salon at No. 7, Joel A. Rosenthal has commanded an intensely loyal group of collectors for almost thirty years providing them with new contemporary designs laced with historic innuendos and startling color combinations. Not simply to be worn and admired, these one-of-a-kind jewels reveal themselves over time to the wearer and admirer alike.
Although rarely seen at auction, on celebrities and never in advertisements, the appearance of one of his creations on the market creates a stir among his followers. This piece, the Mogol flower bracelet, conjures potent images of India and the rich, passionate colors that are found in its patterns and motifs. Luscious buds and flowers in intense colors rise from the surface, threatening to entwine the wearer's wrist and envelope them in the floral sensuality, not simply tamed by the borders of the metal. The space-age oxidized titanium are overrun by the wildness and overgrowth of nature, tempting the eye with its ever-changing hues of metallic purple.
