Lot Essay

The original bust of Villacerf (1629-1699) at the age of 63 was modelled by Desjardins (Breda 1640-Paris 1694), but none of the three existing versions (including the one in the Louvre) is by his own hand as the original offered to the Academy on April 4 1693 has disappeared.

Another version of this marble was recently sold at Christie's New York, 21 May 2003, lot 49 ($21,000).
