NORTH INDIA, CIRCA 1930

The design of this carpet is a direct copy of the 'Vase' carpet in the Baltimore Museum of Art (M.S. Dimand and Jean Mailey, Oriental Rugs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1973, fig.103, pp.72-73). This early Safavid border design was later adapted in Caucasian weavings, as seen on lot 5 in the present sale.
