Lot Essay

Compare the related beasts under similar glazes, but without plinths, which are in the Rijksmuseum, illustrated by C.J.A. Jörg, Chinese Ceramics in the Collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, 1997, no. 217, pp. 192-3, where they are described as pug dogs made to look fierce to ward off demons.
