Lot Essay
Joseph Fröhlich and the 'Baron' Schmiedel were jesters at the Saxon Court of Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Kändler made various porcelain portraits of them, and his work reports for 1736 mention a figure of Hofnarr Fröhlich, which he based on a 1729 print by C.F. Boetius. For a full discussion of this model, see Ulrich Pietsch Die figürliche Meissner Porzellanplastik von Gottlieb Kirchner und Johann Joachim Kaendler (Munich, 2006), pp. 11-13, nos. 4 and 5. Also see Otto Walcha, 'Fröhlich und Schmiedel im Meissner Porzellan' Keramos (April 1966), No. 32, pp. 35-40, where a similar example is illustrated.
