Modelled by J.J. Kändler, in a black conical hat with a gilt band, white ruff, gilt-edged light-blue jacket, puce undershirt, buff trousers and black boots, his black braces with the Sgraffito date 1743 flanking the initials J.F., standing with his thumbs resting in his braces, on a high octagonal plinth base edged with gilding and with four gilt rosettes (restoration to hat, neck and edge of base, slight wear to gilding and tip of hat)

Lot Essay

Joseph Fröhlich and the 'Baron' Schmiedel were jesters at the Saxon Court of Augustus III, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Kändler made various porcelain portraits of them, and his work reports for 1736 mention a figure of Hofnarr Fröhlich, which he based on a 1729 print by C.F. Boetius.
