Lot Essay

An identical censer of the same size and design is illustrated in Arts of the Scholar's Studio, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, p. 164, no. 139, where the author compares the vessel's close resemblance in style to 15th century lacquer decoration. It has also been argued that since decorative motifs on these censers did not follow the archaic bronze or Song ceramic tradition there seems no reason to question a Xuande dating, ibid.
