The culmination of four years' research and development by Orville and Wilbur Wright, on December 17, 1903 in Kittyhawk, NC, the Wright Flyer became the first powered heavier-than-air flying machine to take flight. The flight lasted twelve seconds and traveled 36 meters. The Flyer is now in the collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D.C.
