A MORION-STYLE ITALIAN HELMET BOWL ADAPTED IN NANBAN STYLE
Momoyama period (ca. 1580)
An Italian cabasset with rising brim at fore and rear in the style of the Spanish morion, adapted by the addition of a Japanese koshi-ita to accommodate a shikoro; the bowl embossed and etched with four panels containing Renaissance armorial motifs, with musical instruments, arms and armor and a helmeted head in classical style, and ringed with sixteen gilt studs in the form of stars; the panels with four deeply carved lozenges, two reinforced from the underside in antiquity
