The jade axe is drilled with a circular hole, and the mottled opaque stone is of a dark brown and black tone with celadon areas and creamy white streaks throughout.

A jade axe also from the Liangzhu Culture from the Peony Collection has a very similar shape to the present lot, illustrated in The Museum of East Asian Art: Jades from China, Hong Kong, 1994, pl. 34 (see fig. 1).
