Lot Essay

The Faun with Pipes a Roman marble after a bronze original dating back to the second half of 4th century. The marble was much admired, once owned by the Borghese family, initially recorded and displayed in 1638. The faun's charm spread during the 18th century, through images and replica's collected by the Grand Tourist's of the peroid. In 1807 Napoleon Bonaparte acquired the bulk of the Borghese antiquities collection, and by 1815 it was re-installed in the Louvre, where it remains on display.
