Cast by Gelot after the models by Mathurin Moreau, Circa 1865
Comprising a mantel clock and a pair of candlesticks; the clock surmounted by a classical figure holding a book, seated on a stool inscribed Gelot Edit and Math. Moreau, the front centred by a circular dial, flanked to each side by a Mythological scene, the movement signed HENRY JULLIEN, PARIS, on a stepped base; the candelabra en suite

Lot Essay

Born in 1822, Mathurin Moreau (d.1912) studied under his father Jean Baptiste Moreau. He exhibited at the Salon, wining a medal in 1877 and another at the 1900 Paris Great Exhibition. He speciliased in allegorical and classical groups, statuettes of historic personalities and busts of his centemporaries.
