Lot Essay

This pair of armchairs, carved from solid rosewood with pegged construction relate to examples made in Bombay. They derive from designs by Peter and Michael 'Angelo' Nicholson, The Practical Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer and Complete Decorator, 1826, and Thomas King, Modern Designs Exemplified, 1829. For a similar example see Armin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, London, 2001, no. 116, p. 297.
