A PAIR OF BLUE AND YELLOW DRAGON BOWLS
LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Each with rounded sides and decorated with two five-claw dragons striding through clouds and flames in pursuit of flaming pearls above a band of overlapping lotus petals encircling the base, the interior with a central medallion enclosing a third dragon, all decorated in bright yellow enamels reserved on a deep underglaze-blue ground

Provenance
Formerly in the collection of Bishop Gowdy (1896-1963), he was appointed a Missionary Teacher at the Anglo-Chinese college in Fuzhou, China, serving in this position 1902-04, and became President in 1904, serving until 1923. By repute he received this pair of dragon bowls in gratitude from a dignitary whose son he taught, possibly Jian jieshi or China's Bishop Chen Wenyuan's father who was a Chinese magistrate in Fuzhou
