Lot Essay

The present figures of flying angels, with their vivid sense of movement, are typical of the work of artists working in South Germany in the second half of the 18th Century. The contraposto stance and swirling drapery, as well as facial type of these angels, is reminiscent of the work of the celebrated Ignaz Gunther (1725-1775), who played an important role in the development of the Bavarian rococo after he settled in Munich in 1753 until his death. A related angel in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Frankfurt, is illustrated in A. Schnberger, Ignaz Gunter, Munich, 1954, no. 106.
