A pair of early Napoleon III green marble, gilt- and patinated-bronze six-light torcheres
Circa 1850
Each surmounted by six foliate branches and nozzles, centred by a sphere with three fleurs de lys, supported by a scantily clad term nymph with scroll and foliate lower terminal, holding Pan's pipes in the other hand, on three scroll and acanthus feet, above a serpentine stepped base; drilled and fitted for electricity

Lot Essay

A related pair of torchères, dated 1842, was delivered by Charles Crozatier on 14 June 1845 to the Duc and Duchesse de Nemours for their Grand Salon at the Tuileries palace in Paris (ill. in Un âge d'or des arts décoratifs 1814-1848, Galerie nationales du Grand Palais, Paris, 10 octobre-30 décembre 1991, Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Paris, 1991, pp. 390-391).
Crozatier created several different models of torchères or candelabra with nymphs, all of different sizes.
