A PAIR OF EXPORT EUROPEAN-SUBJECT PLATES
Circa 1745
Decorated at the centre in a Meissen-style cartouche, primarily en grisaille with gilt and iron-red details, depicting 'Les Pèlerins de l'Isle de Cythère' as in the previous lot, within a gilt scrolling foliage surround, the rim with a band of spearheads, one with an underside rim chip

Lot Essay

See footnote to the previous lot. Due to the popularity of Meissen porcelain with this design, it is possible orders to reproduce it on export porcelain were sent to China. Assuming this to be the case, the present service, due to its Meissen-style cartouche, may well have been amongst the first of the Chinese versions.
