EDO-SHOWA PERIOD, LATE 17TH-20TH CENTURY
The dishes decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e on a black ground with pavilions among trees beside a lake, the wide rims with hanabishi design, the paper box decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and nashiji with geese among peony and rockwork, nashiji interior, the box converted in Europe with hinges and lockplate and later Japanning
The dishes - 13 in. (33 cm.) diameter, the box - 14¼ in. (36 cm.) wide
Together with a lacquer tebako, three cabinets and a tray (8)
Provenance
Some possibly Sarah, 1st Duchess of Marlborough (1660-1744), and thence by descent through her daughter Anne (1683-1716), wife of Charles, 3rd Earl of Sunderland (1675-1722) to her favourite grandson Hon. John Spencer (1708-46), father of John, 1st Earl Spencer (1734-1783).
