Lot Essay

The tops of these tables relate to one in the collection of Benjamin Hewitt while the turned legs are virtually identical to a card table in the collection of the Yale University Art Gallery. Both are attributed to the Philadelphia area and illustrated in Benjamin A. Hewitt, Patricia E. Kane and Gerald W.R. Ward, The Work of Many Hands: Card Tables in Federal American 1790-1820 (New Haven, 1982), cat. nos 46 and 47.
