Lot Essay

These gueridon stands for flower-vases or candelabra are conceived in the robust late 18th century Roman fashion as tripod-altars. Their hollowed tazzae tops are wreathed by antique flutes and libation-paterae. Their pillars terminate in scrolls in a more robust manner than illustrated in a related 'Candle Stand' pattern in A. Hepplewhite & Co.'s The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 3 eds. 1788, 1789 and 1794, pl. 111.
