The jasperware pedestals on this pair of candlesticks are similar to those on a pair of candelabra, sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 10 April 2003, lot 121, and stamped 'WEDGWOOD'. The antique altar pedestals of blue and white jasperware depict scenes of Domestic Employment, derived from designs by Elizabeth, Lady Templetown (d. 1823), whose involvement with Josiah Wedgwood commenced in 1783. A candlestick with an almost identical pedestal to the present lot is illustrated in J. Bourne and V. Brett, Lighting in the Domestic Interior, London, 1991, p. 120, fig. 400.
