the dishes of shaped oval section with a gadrooned rim, the conforming covers with a heraldic handle, each piece engraved with a coat-of-arms, the dishes marked on back, the covers marked inside - the dishes 37cm. (14½in.) long, 170oz. (5,287gr.).

Lot Essay

The arms are those of John William, Earl Dudley and 9th Baron Ward (1781-1833). He was Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1827-28 and was created Earl Dudley of Dudley Castle, October 5, 1827.

A warming dish, cover and liner engraved with the same arms, by Robert Garrard, London, 1823 was sold at Christie's New York, 19 April 2002, lot 340.
