Lot Essay

This scene is possibly after a painting by Nicholas Lancret. An identical plate is illustrated by J. G. Veiga, Chinese Export Porcelain in Private Brazilian Collections, London, 1989, p. 176, pl. 148. Another is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 65, fig. 3.7. An enamelled version with different border is illustrated by J. A. Lloyd Hyde, Oriental Lowestoft, Chinese Export Porcelain, Newport, 1964, p. 88, pl. XV, fig. 54.
