Lot Essay
This pair of chairs have an apron centered by a richly carved scallop shell and flanked by acanthus leaves that correspond closely to an armchair of the same date (see The Knight of Glin and J. Peill, Irish Furniture, New Haven, 2007, p. 209, cat. no. 19). The carving on both chairs can also be compared to contemporary Irish side tables. The pierced splat relates to those on a triple-back settee in the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, illustrated, ibid, p. 209, cat. no. 18.
