The Glin Castle banqueting hall chairs, conceived in an antiquarian French/antique manner, are heraldically charged with FitzGerald crests. Originally from a set of ten, these 'crested' hall chairs were commissioned by John Fraunceis FitzGerald to furnish the new - and empty - Neo-Classical Entrance Hall at Glin following the 1803 sales caused by the financial extravagance of his father, Colonel John FitzGerald. Following in his father's footsteps after his marriage in 1812, John Fraunceis FitzGerald embarked on a similarly lavish scheme to battlement and refurbish Glin between 1815-20, embracing not only the house but also the Park, Gate Lodges and follies.
Their Grecian form, introduced to London around 1800 at the connoisseur Thomas Hope's Mansion/Museum, was soon adopted by fashionable cabinet-makers such as Messrs. Gillow of Oxford Sreet.
