The present model is a copy of the greyhound 'Eos', a bronze work by the sculptor John Francis (1780-1861), which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1848. Eos was Prince Albert's favourite dog and accompanied him from Germany when he married Queen Victoria in 1840. There were bronze models made for both the Italian Gardens at Osborne House, Isle of Wight, and Windsor Castle.
