A PAIR OF MID-VICTORIAN GILTWOOD AND EBONISED SIDE CHAIRS

Each with an balloon-shaped back centred by an Earl's coronet, above a padded seat, on fluted tapering legs headed by foliage, one chair covered in white brushed cotton and stamped to one seat rail 'C.HINDLEY & SONS, 134 OXFORD ST. LONDON 21257'and incised 'H' on another seat rail, the other chair covered in pink coral-patterned cotton and stamped twice 'WG'; together with two chairs of identical design, reduced in height, all four chairs with batten-carrying holes, refreshments to the decoration (4)

Almost certainly supplied to Francis Alexander, 8th Earl of Kintore (1828-1880).

Lot Essay

Prior to their acquisition of the cabinet-makers Miles & Edwards of 134 Oxford Street in 1844, C. Hindley & Sons were carpet, rug and floor manufacturers. Items stamped 'C. Hindley & Sons 134 Oxford Street' can be dated to after 1844.
