Lot Essay

Patterns for related oil lamps, in the Roman manner, featured in George Smith's Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (pl.141). Amongst the leading manufacturers of such lamps in the 1820s were Messrs Hancock and Rixon, trading as lustre, lamp and glass manufacturers from Cockspur Street, Pall Mall, and Thomas Messenger & Sons of Birmingham and London, who advertised as 'Manufacturers of Chandeliers, Tripods and Lamps of every description in bronze and or-moulu'.
