Maurice Scooler (1827-1900) was born in Wurzburg, Bavaria and immigrated to New Orleans in 1842. He was initially employed by a jeweler in the Third District and set up his own shop in 1848. Listed as a jeweler in New Orleans city directories, he was primarily an importer of finished goods. Following the Civil War, his firm manufactured krewe favors for various carnival organizations' Mardi Gras balls. (Crescent City Silver, The Historic New Orleans Collection, 1980, p. 88-91.)
