One decorated with a phoenix standing on pierced rocks amidst tree peony and crabapple, the other with a pheasant standing on rocks amidst poppies and branches of viburnum, all in variously colored soapstone, lapis lazuli and mother-of-pearl inlaid in black lacquer

Lot Essay

Compare the inlaid black lacquer screen included in the exhibition, Fine and Rare Chinese Works of Art and Ceramics, June 2003, Roger Keverne, London, p. 103, no. 124, which depicts two long-tailed birds perched on the branch of a magnolia tree above peony and camellia growing from rocks. As with the present panels it is inlaid in mother-of-pearl and soapstone, as well as other materials, and like the decoration on the present pair of panels is quite realistic in its depiction.
