These tables, each with a heraldic tiled-panel top in richly moulded borders and tiled stretcher-shelf linking trestle-ends with paired-pilaster supports, are likely to have been commissioned to display works-of-art in the Great Gallery by Sir William Stirling-Maxwell. Each encaustic-tiled top, with 'Etruscan' black and red ribbon-fretted border, displays ribbon-tied medallions with the Stirling family crest. The tiles were possibly supplied in the 1870's by the Campbell Brick and Tile Company of Stoke-on-Trent.
