Lot Essay

In their overall form, these hall benches are derived from Regency prototypes executed by cabinet-makers such as George Bullock (d.1818). Bullock's pattern went on to inspire R.Brown's pattern in The Rudiments of Drawing Cabinet Furniture, circa 1819-1822 and enjoyed enduring popularity, as a similar hall seat was still being included by Loudon in his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture of 1839, figs. 2079 and 1863.
