Lot Essay

These Roman 'altar' tripods, with ring-bearing 'Egyptian' lions as featured in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration (1807), are likely to have served as stands for colza-oil vases and correspond to a pair introduced to Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire following the inheritance of the estate in 1804 by Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 2nd Baron Scarsdale (d. 1837) (sold by The Viscount Scarsdale and the Kedleston Trustees, in these Rooms, 21 June 1990, lot 147).
