A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE BUST OF A WOMAN
CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.
Wearing a tunic and a mantle draped over her head as a veil and pinned at her left shoulder, the pendant tassels of the brooch visible below the drapery pulled across her chest and held in her raised left hand, her right hand below clutching a swirling fold of drapery, her hair bound in a turban of twisted cloth and fronted by a broad diadem ornamented with vertical bands, pinned on either side, her hair brushed back over the tops of her ears, with a long wavy tress falling onto each shoulder, wearing a beaded necklace and earrings with twin spherical pendants, her almond-shaped eyes articulated, preserving some black pigment for the irises, the thin brows incised, the bust positioned in front of a curtain suspended by a rosette pin on either side, from which rises a palm branch, an inscription in Aramaic to the right, reading: "Alas! Shishta, daughter of Belbu"
