Lot Essay

Caskets such as the present lot and another closely similar example sold in These Rooms in 1996 (10 December 1996, lot 63) seem to have been the luxury models of their day. They are stylistically very close to the more widespread pastiglia caskets which were presumably made as a less expensive alternative to examples in ivory.
