Lot Essay

This most unusual rug is a product of the same fashion as the preceding lot. Here however a mixture of Sasanian sources rather than Achaemenid has been used to create the design. The main hunting scene is taken from the Sasanian carvings at Taq-i Bustan while the panel below it shows Bahram II as at Naqsh-i Rustam. The main building at the top is the magnificent Sasanian palace at Ctestiphon with a little reconstruction by the weaver!
