Lot Essay

This table, designed in the Louis XVI antique fashion and embellished with Marie Antoinette's cypher, is intended to evoke Empress Euginies Saint-Cloud apartment, whose elegant furnishings associated with the eighteenth century French Queen, including a Shévres-mounted table supplied by Riesener for Versailles Petit Trianon. Queen Victoria occupied the apartment during her visit to the 1855 Paris exhibition, where she purchased related furniture exhibited by Edouard Kreisser (fl.1843-1863) of the boulevard de la Madeleine and rue Basse-du-Rempart.
