Lot Essay
The cabinet's japanned decoration is derived from the Chinese patterns published Messrs. Stalker and Parker in A Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing, 1688. The late 17th century mania for imported Oriental goods included lacquer panels from imported Chinese chests and screens which were often cut up and applied to English carcases. Such was the demand for lacquer that English japanners found a ready market for imitation lacquer to satisfy the public's hunger for all things Oriental.
A related double-domed cabinet-on-chest was sold by the late Mrs Michael Behrens, in these Rooms, 4 July 2002, lot 63 and a closely related cabinet-on-chest with four long drawers in the base, from the collection of Basil Oxenden, Esq., is illustrated in R.
