His family on his father's side originated from Aalborg in Denmark and came to England in the mid 19th century. His father was export director for a lace manufacturer and travelled widely in South America. He read economics at Nottingham University and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1952. After two years National Service with the Fleet Air Arm, he returned to Nottingham, entering his father-in-law's lace business in partnership with his brother-in-law, later establishing the firm of Krarup & Gill in Long Eaton. He started to collect in the 1960s, focusing initially on modern silver, particularly Georg Jensen and Robert Welch. With his move in 1970 to 'Greenhill', an imposing country house set in the heart of Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire, his interests broadened to include early oak and walnut furniture, pewter and textiles. The house was to become his home for the next 40 years and provided a fitting place in which to display his collection. Throughout his life Michael Krarup has derived enormous pleasure from collecting, not just from the pieces themselves but also from the people he has met along the way. He has formed strong links and enduring friendships with several dealers who have advised and encouraged him over the years, including William Stokes in Cirencester, Alastair Dickenson in London and Stephen Jarrett of Witney Antiques in Oxfordshire. Michael celebrated his 80th birthday earlier this year and feels it is now time to give others the opportunity to enjoy the various furniture and objects that have given him and his family so much pleasure over the last forty years.
