Lot Essay

Images of crowned Buddhas first emerged in Northeastern India between the 9th and 11th centuries and inspired the evolution of a related iconography in Southeast Asia. This is a rare example with striking arched crown with a smooth, silvery green patina; for a related example, with similar headdress, but of smaller size and less elaborate execution, see G. Coedès, Bronzes Khmèrs, 1923, pl. XXIV, 1.
