The jia, is associated with libation, and would have contained wine.
This rare jia dates to the early Anyang period, circa 13th century BC, and appears to be a transition from an earlier, more minimally decorated type such as the jia dated to mid-Shang excavated in 1974 in Henan province, and illustrated in Zhongguo Qingtongqi Quanji - Xia/Shang - 1, Beijing, 1997, no. 99 and p. 29, and a late Shang example excavated at Anyang, Henan province, illustrated in Zhongguo Qingtongqi Quanji - Shang - 3, Beijing, 1997, no. 51 and p. 24. Like the earlier example, no. 99 in vol. 1, the present jia has a thin, plain loop handle, blade-form legs that are hollowed on the inner facet and a pair of posts surmounted by large rounded caps cast in intaglio with a whorl design. Unlike the earlier example, which has a plain bulbous body below a narrow band of diagonal scrolls on the flaring neck, the present jia has a taotie band around the body and a band of dragons in profile around the shoulder, similar to, but not as refined as the bands of decoration found on the later jia, no. 51 in vol. 3. This later example also has a thicker loop handle surmounted by a bovine head and the caps on the posts are conical. The body spreads more gracefully from the shoulder than the body of the present vessel, which has a rounded shoulder that continues down into the rounded body.
